4/25/2017-ACTING-Pics / Recap From We Need A Hero Convention

-Here’s a recap of my time at the WE NEED A HERO Convention in Utica NY last weekend. Got some pics with celebs Tiamak (The Last Dragon), Nadia Verrucci (voice of Juno in Assassin’s Creed games / Being Human / For Honor), Jayne Heitmeyer (Sirens / Andromeda / Earth Final Conflict), Noelle Hannibal (Star Trek First Contact / Star Trek Voyager / Buffy The Vampire Slayer) and more 🙂 Pics can be seen via the link below to my acting page on Facebook.

-April 22-23, 2017-Around two months ago I received a message from James T. Manson-the man who was putting together the We Need A Hero Convention in Utica, NY. He asked if I’d like to be one of the guests there and I agreed. This was the first time he put together a con, and the first time I’d been asked to be a guest at one. I made the mistake of not asking about a table-assuming that, as a guest, I’d just have one. I found out a little too late that I didn’t. While James and his team did offer me one at the event, it was too late to get all the stuff I needed together, let alone head back to Syracuse to get it, so I just loaded up my backpack with Night of Something Strange & Tales of Dracula DVDs (I didn’t have any other titles on me-another newbie mistake) and spent a lot of time just talking / networking with people walking around or those who had tables……….

-The first day, I got there while all the venders were loading up. My friends Sarah Randall and her guy Aaron Brown provided me transportation on the way there-which was awesome, considering that I hadn’t slept too much the few days approaching this day. Having said that, I was awake the way up (but nodded off on the way back). Mad Angel Films had a table here-and I found out it was on the fourth floor-right across from where the movies were to be played. Two of the films I was in from MAF (“Brackish” and “Slade Collins & The Tree of Life”) were to play there, but set up was late and the movies didn’t show. Likewise, there was talk of a panel to be held discussing fighting in films which would of consisted of me , Ryan Santiago, Matt Peters-and even Taimak (“The Last Dragon”) and Kevin Duhaney (“Power Rangers Dino Thunder”)-in which case me, Ryan and Matt would probably not say anything-wanting to hear what those guys had to say too 🙂 Unfortunately, the panel didn’t happen. It was cool seeing a number of people I knew-as well as making new associations and friends. In a way, not being chained to a table worked to my advantage. I managed to sell out of all but 1 of my NoSS DVDs as well as some copies of NoSS on blu-ray and some Tales DVDs. I also got a chance to check out some venders and artists here-which was cool……….

-The band Wicked was playing in the evening but, sadly, I couldn’t attend due to work commitments. I ended up only getting three-four hours sleep and then, trying to get up-which, due to lack of proper sleep the last couple of days, was kinda hard to do. Getting old sucks 🙂 So Sunday I arrived later than I should have. In fact, by the time I got there, the MAF table, and several others, had already packed up and left, so I took the time to visit the celeb area, which was on the second floor……….

-I ran into scream queen Genoveva Rossi Saturday and hung out with her on and off thru the two days. Her schedule makes mine look like I’m napping most of the time 🙂 Artist Jonathan Myers presented to both me and Greta Volkova his poster art for “Tales of Dracula”-which was awesome. I got to meet his wife Lola-who’s also a talented artist-and their daughter Sara. There were also several celebrity artists and actors here that I got to meet and take pics with. They were all very wonderful and pleasant to talk with. A few highlights-I showed the trailer to “Night of Something Strange” to actresses Nadia Verrucci (voice of Juno in Assassin’s Creed games / Being Human / For Honor) and Jayne Heitmeyer (Sirens / Andromeda / Earth Final Conflict) and they seemed to get a kick out of it-as well as the Tales of Dracula stuff. I found out actress Noelle Hannibal (Star Trek First Contact / Star Trek Voyager / Buffy The Vampire Slayer) was friends with people from Star Trek Continues (the competition!-HA! 🙂 ) Actor Solon Tsangaras (Deathhouse) loves zombies so he grabbed up NoSS-I believe he and actor Carey Means (Aqua Teen Hunger Force) were going to watch it soon while eating 🙂 Had some great conversations with artist Steve Geiger (Marvel), Rusty Gilligan (Rusty Ink!), Jim O’Reiley (Topps / Upper Deck), Nigel Carrington (Starr Skills Comics) and many more. Unfortunately, the time it took for me to meet and interact meant I either wasn’t able to meet several celebs or, in the case of actors Brian O’Halloran & Scott Schiaffo (Clerks), I was only able to talk briefly cause they were tearing down their tables and I didn’t want to get in their way……….

-One actor I did get to meet, and even talk to for about ten minutes, was Tiamak. Kind of funny, before they left, the guys from MAF had left him a DVD of “Slade Collins: In & Out of Time” with several autographs on it-but not mine-so that was the perfect conversation starter. I ended up signing that copy and he signed a copy of his autobiography (audio book) that I bought. He’s a very calm person-you could say he had the “glow” of ultra-chill about him. 🙂 We hit on a few different subjects including, of all things, how Facebook fan pages have limited interaction with your fans unless you pay to boost the exposure. I’m a big fan of his performance (and Vanity’s) in “The Last Dragon”-so meeting and talking to him was a fun experience……….

-“Tales of Dracula” did screen on Sunday and the room was filled to half capacity 🙂 I was told by the people who saw it that I made a great Dracula so that was cool. I also talked with James M. here and there. Putting together your first big event like a con will always teach hard lessons and I know James is determined that things are much better next year. I had a good time-hopefully the next con I go to I’ll have some time to get proper sleep 🙂

4/21/2017-R.I.P. / THINKING-Prince

-One year ago today Prince was found dead in an elevator at his home at Paisley Park. Like so many others, his death came as a complete shock to me. He was only 57. Even after one year, a part of me still seems to be in disbelief about it.

-I first became exposed to Prince when he released his single “1999′ (which was played heavily on MTV-remember when they used to play music videos 24/7? ), but it wasn’t until he released “Purple Rain”-both the album and the movie-that I started to really get into his music. The man was a true musician and artist. I will admit that, by 1995, Prince would be off my radar from time to time, (I have all the CDs between 1999 to The Gold Experience-and am slowly filling in the gaps), but I would steer back here and there to re-visit. Initially, my favorites were “Purple Rain,” “When Doves Cry” and “Computer Blue”-and they are all still up there. A lot of the music he either wrote and / or recorded with other artists I liked as well-such as “A Love Bizarre” (Shelia E.) and “Nasty Girl” (Vanity 6). I used to play “My Name is Prince” quite a lot when that came out-same with “You Got The Look,” “Sexy MF,” “Cincy C. (I’ve always been enamored with Cindy Crawford 😉 ), among others. Almost all my music CDs are in storage at this time so it’s been awhile…

-Prince was extremely prolific with music, as well as being a multi-instrumentalist-both of which very much appealed to me. One of the things that drew me to Paul Stanley (KISS) initially was here was a guy who could do many things and do them well. Prince took that to another level in many ways (ironic that there are some similarities between Prince and The StarChild). One of the great things with me when I was discovering KISS, for example, was that there was so much output (recorded and live) by them that it was almost like going on a treasure hunt; discovering music that hit me (and, admittedly, some that didn’t). It’s a similar case here-when time permits. Even better, it’s always fun to discover something a musician you like that makes one initially go “huh?” For example-the voice interaction that Vanity does on the Vanity 6 song, “If A Girl Answers (Don’t Hang Up)”-she’s suppose to be talking to another girl, but it’s actually Prince saying the lines. An interesting quirk to be sure 🙂 It’s such a shame that his extreme output for music has been extinguished, although there are apparently quite the supply of songs still in his “Vault” that may, or may not see the light of day.

-He was also mysterious and private, which was also appealing to me-even more so as I get older. Having just experienced a very tiny fraction of fame with both music and acting myself, its enough for me to see the appeal to some of that and / or how things can change to where that way becomes more the norm. This is a time where it seems many feel free to post everything about themselves online-no matter how personal the subject matter. The age of reality TV I guess. For me, I have two sides, my public side and my private side. It may seem like I’m very public with my life, but only to a certain point. I have a very private side that very few know about-at least until “WAYNE-THE BOOK” is released (HA!) 🙂 But seriously, as an example, I hardly have any private pics up. If I don’t want people to see them, I don’t put them up. Simple. I don’t have to put them up and then “hide” the album for the most part. If there are hidden ones, at one point they were quite public and there’s a specific reason why they are not anymore., but I digress…

-The last song that I “discovered” by Prince was shortly after his death. At that time, You Tube was hit with a flood of Prince videos-live and studio. Many have been removed, but here’s the video of a live performance that contains the song that I discovered called “Te Amo Corazon.” Yeah-it’s not a heavy song or even really a rock song-and I don’t care. I’ve always been into diverse styles of music even as a kid (one of my top favorite bands is ABBA for example). To me, this is one beautiful song and, to me-because of when I discovered it-a sad one. I’m sure I will be discovering more Prince songs that will hit me in the future.

-I never got to see Prince live-which is something I regret. I just heard that the concert he did at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, NY in 1985 will be released on DVD / blu-ray. If true, I’m definitely getting a copy. After his death, someone uploaded a copy of this concert from VHS-it would be great to have a copy of this fully restored. So basically, I was limited to TV appearances. There were two times that I saw Prince that immediately come to mind. The first was in 2004 when George Harrison was posthumously inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. A star studded cast performed on his song “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” This has always been one of my favorite Beatles songs anyway, but when I saw this…Prince was mostly in the background on this song till the end, where Prince just turned it on-so much that he was given free reign to continue soloing for three minutes. No-it’s not a shred fest, but-to me-it’s very emotional and emotion wins over technique every time. It’s kinda funny cause, from time to time, it seems like Tom Petty wanted to come back in vocally and he starts to, but then let’s Prince continue on-cause it’s one of those magical moments.

-The second was when Prince played the Super Bowl halftime show in 2007-in the rain. That was incredible to listen to and watch. He could have easily cancelled due to the rain and no one would’ve blamed him, but he soldiered on and delivered a brilliant performance-especially of “Purple Rain.” It’s such an emotional song and -to me- at the end when he has the audience sing with him that “Whoo Hoo Hoo Hoo” part-it’s almost like this incredible sadness is there expressing itself-even more so during this event in the rain than with the studio recording.

-So back to 2016. His death really hit me hard-more than I thought it would. Even writing this, I’m still not fully over it. I don’t think I ever will be-for many reasons. One involves the details that were eventually reveled leading up to the days of his death. How he wasn’t in the best of health, how he was using painkillers with ever increasing doses to deal with the physical pains pains he was experiencing, hearing details on how he lost his child days after he was born and what that must of been like and how all this, and more relates to my life in various degrees. But I believe what hit me the hardest was this quote from Alynda Wheat in her article on Prince’s death in the May 9, 2016 issue of People Magazine…

“…The heartbreak is that a man beloved by so many, a man who once said that “friendship, real friendship [is] all that counts,” apparently died alone…”

R.I.P. Prince…

4/15/2017-THINKING-Your Life Sucks Because You Suck

-Nice way to title an entry huh? So why did I do that-and why am I using a pic of me “thinking” from 2009? Well…

-The pic is easiest to explain. One-It kind of ties in to this entry cause it’s something I’ve heard before, so it’s kind of like a flashback to me-just like the pic. Two-and probably the reason that has more weight-I was too lazy and looked too “photo unready” to take a selfie to use for this so… 🙂 Maybe next time.

-The link below is to an article that I discovered a few days ago, which I linked to my personal Facebook page. It’s received a nice response. As I wrote on there, it’s harsh…and while there are many factors to be considered, overall I find this to be true. This wasn’t the first time I’ve heard something like this though. Going back when I first discovered Larry Winget’s first book “Shut Up, Stop Whining & Get a Life,” (possibly back in 2009), I remember listening to an audio book of his-might be the same book-where Larry recounts a story of meeting someone backstage after one of his seminars. I’m paraphrasing here, but it goes something like this…

The man came up to Larry and told him his talk up there was great, but that “you don’t understand…” and then proceeded to describe how his situation was so different and hard and in the end he said “You see Larry-my life sucks!” Larry’s reply was along the lines of this “Well, let me help you with this. Your life sucks because YOU SUCK!” Just one of the reasons Larry’s known as “The Pitbull of Personal Development.” 🙂 I remember when I read that, it had a profound effect on me-and made me realize that if I want to make my life better, I have to do it. No one else can do it for me or “save” me.

-Surprisingly, I couldn’t find a video, or even an audio clip of Larry saying this. However, I did find this video, which credits Larry for saying it and then expounding upon it for a few minutes so here’s that…

-This also ties in to another life lesson I received many years ago. I used to work at Kmart when I was much younger and I remember going thru one of my “pity parties,” in part cause I really didn’t know how to deal with so many of the things that were coming at me from all angles. I remember power walking (I was quite “Pisseth Off” 🙂 ) into sporting goods and seeing a quadriplegic in a wheelchair, drool dripping down his face. The person with him was down the isle looking at something. I couldn’t help but stare for a moment. I’d read about quadriplegics, but had never seen met one in real life. Obviously I felt sorry for him. Worse-the thought hit me about how the mind of a person can be trapped in a body that can’t function unaided. I don’t know if his brain was affected or if it was perfectly normal as I was thinking at the time, but regardless, what are my problems compared to that? It immediately snapped me out of my pity party and I’ve had this in my mental cabinet for years to use in helping me get a grip on things. Admittedly, when my depression cycle hits me real hard it doesn’t help much, but that’s another story for another time…

-As Sean says in his video, there will be many reasons and excuses people will site for not taking personal responsibility for your life. There’s a lot of bad things that happen to people-some truly horrible things. While I’m sure there are cases that are worse, one that I site as an example of how bad things can get, as well as inspiration, yet still rising above is the case of guitarist Jason Becker. In the late 80’s he was a rising guitar star, making his name with Cacophony and being the guitarist who played on David Lee Roth’s “A Little Ain’t Enough” record. That rise was brutally cut short when he got ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) which not only took away his ability use his body, but even his ability to speak. He communicates with his eyes via a system developed by his father. In spite of that, not only was he able to finish composing an album called “Perspective” (released in 1996), but he plans on releasing a new album this coming July. This was the situation I had envisioned when I was at Kmart years ago about a perfectly healthy mind being trapped in a body that cannot work unaided. What are my problems compared to that? Here’s two videos to illustrate my point with Jason-before and after…

-So when I stumbled upon the article below, it brought back the impact of those lessons from long ago-making me realize that, thru out the years, it had been dulled and, in many ways, had to be “re-learned” again-and that’s good. It’s stuff like this that I need in my arsenal-and also one of the reasons I’m putting this on here. Also below is a link to Larry Winget’s site. He’s very blunt-no sugar coating-but that’s good cause you need that. If you’re doing something wrong and / or are sucking at something, you need to know that so you can change course; and you’ll know. You can’t fool yourself-at least not for long.

-Wow-this is kinda like an actual blog post I’m making here instead of my usual promo stuff-what a concept. 🙂 Maybe next time I’m “thinking” I can come up with a decent modern pic. 🙂

4/13/2017-THINKING-Neil Bledsoe’s Time With The LA KISS

-This was a series of articles (each one being quite long actually) I discovered while lurking on the KISS FAQ MESSAGE BOARDS. It’s about actor Neil Bledsoe’s time with the LA KISS-an arena football team. Very informative IMO. Much of that involves reading about what it takes just to make the team, what had to be done and the thinking behind. What made me think even more is when Neil would be taking about his goals and aspirations-as well as those of others. They including people who rising stars and those who may have already been past their prime. Those who were reaching out to the top for the first time as well as those who missed a golden opportunity and doing everything they could to get another shot.

-What I found quite interesting was how all of this, in regards to athletes and sports, had so many parallels with those in the creative fields-actors, musicians, writers, painters, dancers and more. IMO, a lot can be taken away from this-as well as a lot to ponder. We all have our doubts-some more than others. There will be times when those doubts get louder. There will be times when you may say to yourself, ” I’ve been doing this for so long-can I really make this happen?” Only you can really answer that…
